German American Day

German-American Day is observed on October 6. It was proclaimed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to celebrate and honor the history of German American immigration and culture to the United States. The date commemorates October 6, 1683, the founding date of Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first German settlement in the original thirteen American colonies. Germantown is now a neighborhood of Philadelphia.
