Our Coast Guard does amazing things.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States armed forces and is involved in maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, and national defense. One of the very first divisions of the Coast Guard were the Lighthouse Keepers. The Coast Guard has been protecting the nations ports and waterways since 1790 as the "Revenue Marine", it is the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service. (The United States Navy cites it was founded in 1775 with the Continental Navy but was disbanded after the Revolutionary War amid fears of a standing army/navy and wasn't brought back into permanent service until 1794.)
