In 1830, shortly after becoming independent from Brazil, Uruguay adopted this flag. Its colors are modeled from Argentina’s flag. Seventeen stripes were included in the original design but they were reduced to nine to represent the nine original departments of Uruguay. The Sun of May claims this flag’s cannon; it is emblematic of freedom and independence.
This outdoor flag is made from durable 200-Denier nylon that has been treated to resist fading. The flag is finished with a sturdy white canvas heading and grommets. Its image is dyed, single-sided, and reversed on the back.
This flag is used by Uruguay’s government and displayed at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.
