The modern German flag was adopted in 1949. It features the traditional German colors black, red, and gold, as declared by the Frankfurt Parliament. These colors were first used in 1840's to symbolize the movement against the Conservative European Order established after Napoleon's defeat. During the Napoleonic Wars black represented servitude, red represented the battles to overcome that servitude, and gold represented freedom.
