Mauritania adopted this flag in 1959. It is designed in the Pan-African colors green and gold. The Sahara Desert is represented by gold. Green and the star and crescent emblem symbolize Islam, Mauritania's most prominent religion.
This outdoor flag is made from durable 200-Denier nylon that has been treated to resist fading. The flag is finished with a sturdy white canvas heading and grommets. Its image is dyed, single-sided, and reversed on the back.
This flag is used by Mauritania's government and displayed at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.
