Tonga’s flag was adopted in 1875, the same year a law was passed to protect the Tongan flag from alteration. The flag was originally identical to the Red Cross flag but was changed to prevent confusion. The cross represents Christianity, the country’s major religion. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ and white stands for purity.
