The Kiribati flag was adopted in 1979. The flag is based on the badge for the Gilbert and Ellice Island British Colony. Against the red background at the top of the flag is a gold frigatebird that represents command of the sea, power, freedom, and Kiribati cultural dance patterns. The sun represents Kiribati’s geographical position close to the equator. The blue and white wavy bands stand for the Pacific Ocean.
