Beginning in 1820, Liberia was colonized by freed slaves from America. That is why the Liberian flag, adopted in 1847, looks similar to the American flag. The 11 stripes stand for each of the signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. Red and white symbolize courage and moral excellence, while blue represents mainland Africa. The white star signifies the ex-slaves’ freedom.
