Portugal adopted this flag in 1911. Red and green have been associated with the Portuguese Republican Party since 1891. Green symbolizes the country’s hope and red represents the people who died defending it. This flag displays the Portuguese shield, which incorporates symbols of the cross, the 5 wounds of Christ, and Judas’s 30 pieces of silver. Legend has it that Alfonso I’s divinely inspired victories in battle led to the Christian elements.
This flag is printed on cotton muslin and mounted to a 30 in. natural wood dowel staff. Base not included.
