Netherlands Flag with Pole Hem and Fringe

The current Netherlands flag was adopted in 1937, although variants have been in use since 1572. The red stripe was originally orange, and the colors were taken from the coat of arms of William of Orange, who led the fight for Dutch independence. The colors changed in the mid-17th century, possibly because red is more visible than orange.

This flag is made from durable 200-Denier nylon that has been treated to resist fading. The flag is finished with a 3 in., flannel-lined pole hem with Velcro hang tab and bordered with gold rayon fringe. Its image is dyed, single-sided, and reversed on the back. This flag is suitable for indoor or parade use.

This flag is used by the Netherlands' government and displayed at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.
