Burundi's flag was adopted in 1967. Green symbolizes hope, white stands for peace, and red represents those who fell during the fight for independence. The 3 stars represent the 3 major ethnic groups in Burundi: the Hutu, the Twa, and the Tutsi. The 3 stars also represent the 3 parts to Burundi's motto: Unite, Travail, Progres
, or "Unity, Work, Progress."
This outdoor flag is made from durable 200-Denier nylon that has been treated to resist fading. The flag is finished with a sturdy white canvas heading and grommets. Its image is dyed, single-sided, and reversed on the back.
This flag is used by Burundi's government and displayed at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.
