The Kiribati flag was adopted in 1979. The flag is based on the badge for the Gilbert and Ellice Island British Colony. Against the red background at the top of the flag is a gold frigatebird that represents command of the sea, power, freedom, and Kiribati cultural dance patterns. The sun represents Kiribati's geographical position close to the equator. The blue and white wavy bands stand for the Pacific Ocean.
This flag is made from durable 200-Denier nylon that has been treated to resist fading. The flag is finished with a 3 in., flannel-lined pole hem with Velcro hang tab and bordered with gold rayon fringe. Its image is dyed, single-sided, and reversed on the back. This flag is suitable for indoor or parade use.
This flag is used by Kiribati's government and displayed at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.
