The Estonian flag, colloquially called the
sinmustvalge (literally "blue-black-white"), was adopted in 1918. The colors have many interpretations. Historically, blue represents ancient freedom, black symbolizes lost independence, and white stands for the promise of a brighter future. Another interpretation, popularized by Martin Lipp, says that blue stands for the sky, black for the soil and worries of the Estonians, and white is for hard work, purity, commitment, and the white sails of ships.
