First of all, what is an outrigger flagpole?
Outrigger flagpoles are any poles which are mounted to fly a flag at any angle besides vertical.
Below we will discuss many popular mounting surfaces for outriggers such as mounting to a utility pole, your home or porch and metal or fiberglass street light poles. See our selection of tangle free spinning outrigger style flagpoles in our store: http://www.flagandbanner.com/products/FBPP0000013258.asp
Before you buy your flag and pole:
No matter what type of flagpole you are planning to mount, be sure to check with your Home Owners Association, City, Community or Utility Company before you even purchase your flag, brackets or flagpole kits. There could be rules and regulations that need to be considered first.
Once you have permission, purchase the correct type of mounting kit, flagpole or individual hardware.
How to attach a flagpole on a telephone pole or utility pole.
There are many ways to attach a flagpole to utility poles or telephone poles. Many small towns use this method of decoration for patriotic holidays.
A few good rules to keep in mind are:
Hang them high enough to keep kids and others from yanking on them or removing them
Hang them high enough to keep trucks from snagging them (most full sized trucks are 13' 6")
Use the same type of bracket and pole (or kit) as you would to mount the outrigger style flagpole and bracket on your house.
Safety First! Remember that you are mounting this on a utility pole and be very cautious about how high you mount your pole to make sure that no part of the pole or flag touches any of the wiring on the pole. It is easy to forget things that are higher than our head but a 6 foot man with an arm reach of more than 3 feet with a pole of 6 or 8 feet in length could accidentally touch the pole to the wires and be electrocuted. So please, always be careful and pay attention to your surroundings when mounting a flagpole, especially on utility poles!
How to attach a flagpole to your house.
All of our kits come with instructions but should you buy your bracket independent from a kit or you have moved and taken your bracket with you, then you may not have instructions on hand. While it is fairly simple, those with little to no DIY experience may need a few instructions.
If you have never drilled into a brick wall before, you may want to watch this video tutorial on how to drill into a brick wall properly.
Tools you need to install your flagpole:
It is an easy 3 step process; you need just a few tools:
a pencil for marking
caulk
drill with bit and screws and/or anchors for the type of material your house is made of such as wood/brick etc
You will also need a flag, flagpole and bracket or kit
a ladder (and a buddy to hold it) if you decide to mount your flag up high
Step 1: Position the bracket against the house and mark the screw holes with a pencil; then pre-drill the holes using a drill bit suited to your house's sheathing. For brick, use a masonry bit, and drill holes into the brick, not the mortar. Be sure to use safety goggles when drilling.
Step 2: Place a dab of caulking in each hole to keep water out, then attach the bracket with 1 1/4-inch stainless-steel screws (replace the screws that came with the bracket if they're too short). If your house is brick, insert plastic or stainless-steel anchors before screwing the bracket into place.
Step 3: Slide the flagpole firmly into the bracket and tighten the thumb screw.
You can also hang a flag vertically—stars on the upper left—from a window, roof eaves, or structural overhang. No matter how you hang it, if you fly your flag at night, be sure to light it. We have several solar lighting options for flag lighting without wiring or electrical work but for the most convience we carry a complete outrigger flag kit with solar light that includes the pole, all the hardware and an American made US Flag.
How to attach a flagpole to a street light pole.
This is a little trickier than mounting it to a wooden utility pole because many street light poles are metal or fiberglass and the city doesn’t want to start drilling holes into their expensive decorative light poles. For this you can use steel banding to help secure the bracket and pole to the street light. These steel bands work on poles of all shapes and sizes.
You will also need to use a specific style of bracket that works with the bands; we call it the Electric Way Bracket. It also includes a thumb screw which keeps the flagpole or staff from slipping out of the bracket. This bracket works with 1 in. diameter poles up to 6 ft. long and for flags up to 3 ft. x 5 ft. which is the most common size flag for these outrigger style poles. These brackets hold your flag at a 45 degree angle.
A final note on flagpole materials and flag durability.
You can choose from wood, metal or fiberglass for your flagpole and you can choose any number of anti-tangle accessories as well. We suggest fiberglass or metal for durability and the longest life. Flag materials are also whatever fits your needs and budget. The most durable flag is our heavy duty polyester flags for heavy winds, harsh direct sunlight and frequently changing weather conditions where flags are flown daily in all sorts of weather. If the flags are only used a few weeks and in fairly normal weather conditions then a standard nylon flag would be best.
