American Flag Day

June 14 is Flag Day, the day our national flag was adopted.

On June 14, 1777 the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution adopting the flag of the United States. On June 14, 1885, a 19-year-old teacher named Bernard J. Cigrand began his campaign to bring a national observance to the American flag. When he was 50, Flag Day was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916. It was not until August 3, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Flag Day is not a federal holiday.
