Cinco de Mayo Flags and Decorations

Cinco de Mayo (The 5th of May) is a regional holiday to the State of Puebla, Mexico, as well as throughout the United States where there is a significant Mexican population . The day commemorates the Mexican militias' victory over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. France used a debt issue to try to take over the country. When the French Army of 6,500 soldiers arrived in the city of Puebla, they were met with roughly 4,500 men who fought and won against the French soldiers. This stopped the French invasion for a limited time. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican culture with parades and festivals. It is a misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's independence day, which is September 16th.
