During 1788-1836, Lorenzo de Zavala, played a significant role in the Texas War of Independence and served as the new Republic's first Vice President. Prior to his involvement in Texas, he served as a strong voice for democracy in Mexico both before and after that nation's freedom from the Spanish Empire.
