arion Military Institute (MMI) is the nation’s oldest military junior college, tracing its origin back to 1842 with the founding of Howard College in Marion, Alabama. Recently MMI celebrated its 175th year.
Marion Military Institute adopted its orange and black colors around 1913 when Woodrow Wilson, then President of Princeton University, gave a Government Day speech at the school. In honor of his visit and the connection between the schools, MMI adopted Princeton’s colors and mascot. In 2006, MMI entered the Alabama Community College System after being a private school for more than 150 years. Their new guidons represent their past connection to Princeton with the orange and black, while recognizing their role as the Military College of Alabama with the red and white stripe.
"The guidons serve their traditional role of identifying the different companies within the Corps of Cadets. This is particularly important on such occasions as our Parents Day Parade, where the mothers of the Company Commanders, representing all the moms of the cadets in that company, tie florets on the guidons. This is a very touching moment every year," said Col Edwin W. Passmore, United States Army (Ret), Vice President for Student Affairs & Commandant of Cadets Director, Center for Leadership and Career Development.
